AAC Evaluations, (Augmentative & Alternative Communication)
At Speech Eat Learn, we provide specialized AAC evaluations focused on high-tech speech-generating devices (SGDs). These are advanced communication systems—often tablet-based or dedicated devices—that give children with limited or unclear speech a reliable way to express themselves using technology.

🧠What Is a Speech-Generating Device?

A speech-generating device (SGD) is a tool that allows a child to communicate using spoken output generated by a screen or app. These devices can be:
-
iPads or tablets with communication apps like LAMP Words for Life, TouchChat, or Proloquo2Go
-
Dedicated devices such as Tobii Dynavox, PRC, or Saltillo systems designed specifically for AAC use
SGDs are life-changing for children who are non-speaking, minimally verbal, or whose speech is not functional in everyday situations. And no—AAC does not stop children from learning to talk. In fact, it often supports and encourages verbal speech.

What to Expect in an AAC Evaluation:

Our AAC evaluations are comprehensive, evidence-based, and personalized to your child’s strengths, access needs, and daily routines. Each evaluation includes:
-
A developmental and caregiver interview
-
Observation of your child’s current communication and play skills
-
Trials with multiple high-tech AAC apps or devices
-
Assessment of access methods (e.g., direct touch, switch scanning, eye gaze)
-
A detailed written report with AAC recommendations
-
Assistance with insurance funding for the device, even if our services are private pay
-
Optional caregiver and team training recommendations

Insurance and Funding Support
Although Speech Eat Learn is a private pay practice, we work closely with families to use the child’s health insurance to secure funding for the recommended speech-generating device. We collaborate with device vendors (like Tobii Dynavox, PRC-Saltillo, and others) to:
-
Submit required documentation
-
Provide trial data
-
Write detailed justification reports for insurance approval
Most families pay privately for the AAC evaluation, but we help ensure the cost of the device itself is covered by the child’s insurance.
AAC Evaluations are available throughout Broward and Palm Beach County.
